Backup pages or straight delivery?
« on: March 07, 2007, 12:53:08 pm »

Time to ask for your wishes again!
What do you prefer:
a) A straight schedule for updates, like one every 10 days, with some backup pages to cover periods when I'm too busy.
b) Seeing new pages right away whenever they are done, sometimes getting one every 2-3 days and sometimes waiting 2-3 weeks.

Wow...that's a tough one... :-X

I'd say a set schedule because, while we may have to wait, we won't be kept in suspense if something happens on your side of the Atlantic.

And it doesn't matter if it's a random period and not a fixed day of the week? Like, "every 5 days" instead of "updates every Tuesday"?
Because, you know, I would like to try making more than one page a week after the remakes are done, but I don't think I could pump out 2 per week. Something between 4-6 days seems pretty reasonable for me, provided life doesn't get in the way.

So far as I'm concerned, it doesn't matter if it's a set day or length of days.

The important thing is that you are able to put out pages as life allows you without overdoing it to the point where you grow tired of it. (which I highly doubt will happen)  So long as you're happy with your work and are content with output, then I'll be happy, too.

I was tired of it, and I wanted to give it up completely last year. Interest had faded to a point where only KAnne was left to comment. It was depressing beyond measure.
Now things got slightly better, and when more remakes are done I want to advertize and hope that will bring me some additional feedback.
This is why I ask for your opinion. I want a better update schedule so I don't lose those few readers who don't leave me in the dark about my work. :)

To me, it doesn't matter whether it's a set day or a random period, either. Whatever works best for you will be fine, eph.^^

I understand how depressing it must have been for you, and I hope things will continue to get better, especially with more advertizing later.

Right now I'm really enthusiastic about the comic and if I could I would grow some extra arms to draw 3 pages a day. ^^
Let's wait for some more opinions, so far everyone leans in favour of set update schedules. I won't have to decide before the anniversary anyway.

Hehe.^^

If you don't have to decide before the anniversary, it sounds like a good idea to wait for more opinion.^^

Well, seems like nobody except you two (three if I count the Germans too) cares about the update schedule.

I like the idea of doing it every set days as well.  *smile*  Though make sure not to stress yourself out over it.

I may have missed the boat on this discussion but I'll say something anyway.
I do enjoy set days.  I pretty much have my favorites memorized so I know which day to check them.  However, when something happens and someone misses an update, it's very disappointing to load the page and see no update.  No Crap! is bad about that.  But then there's ones like The Dreamland Chronicles where he has about a hundred pages ready in advance.
Those that update at their leisure can be fine as well.  The Noob does that, Gianna had a great idea and keeps a status bar on the page for when the next strip will be done.  Sometimes you can end up just waiting forever with no word from an artist.  I was afraid that both Dead in Dreamland and No Rest for the Wicked had been abandoned when the authors didn't update for more than 3 months.
I suppose in the end it's whatever works for you.  Just so long as you stay consistant.  If you set a day, for God's sake stick to it.  Or just posting on the main page about how often you update works fine too.  As long as there's consistancy, your readers won't get upset.

I agree that it's of utmost importance that Seekers gets a fixed schedule now. Until the remakes are done I'll stick with the "every 3-7 days" thing. Unless something serious happens I should be able to keep that up. Once the remakes are done I'll start on working on pages in advance too.

I think from what I read here (and in the German thread too) my goal should be to work for 2 pages a week, like Tuesday and Saturday or something. It's just easier to remember than "every 4 days, now when did I read the last one...". I might try "every Friday" for a while first until I have build up enough backups. Still nothing stops me from publishing 2 pages on a Friday every now and then, right.

*g* If I should ever have *100* pages in advance, I'll either burst from the urge to show them off or I'll add a button saying "donate 5$ for instant new page".  :dg

*sigh*

It seems I'm just not made for schedules...
Ever since I stick to the Wednesday schedule I hate every single page I've drawn. None of them are pretty or express what I wanted to show. -_-

If all the schedules does is making you hate drawing the pages and the result, maybe you shouldn't stick to it. Having some kind of schedule - even a very loose one - can be nice, but not at the expense of the comic's quality.

I firmly disagree.  If you don't want to stick to an update schedule, then it shouldn't be put online in pages, but in chapters or books.  Putting them up at a scheduled time is part of the point of doing a webcomic, or at least, I think so.  Often times I've found that if I stick to a schedule, I hate my drawings too, but not because the drawings are actually bad.  I just don't like the schedule.

Eph, I suggest you put one of these hated comics on the forums and ask for some honest critique.  If we agree that it's bad compared to others you like, then maybe you need to find a new schedule that doesn't restrict you like this one does.
